Is the Google Guaranteed Badge Worth It?

The short answer is usually yes. But not for the reason most shops think, and there are real catches worth knowing before you sign up. Here is the honest version.

Is the Google Guaranteed Badge Worth It?

The short version

The badge comes with Local Services Ads

It is not a standalone product. You get verified, you run LSAs, the verified check shows up next to your name at the top of the results.

The real value is placement and trust

It puts you above the regular ads with a Google-backed check mark. That position and that trust are what move the phone, more than the guarantee itself.

You pay per lead, not per job

Roughly $45 to $90 a lead by trade. You pay for the contact, even if it never books, so dialing in lead quality matters.

It is verification, not a guarantee

Google renamed it from Google Guaranteed to Google Verified in late 2025 and dropped the customer money-back guarantee. The check means Google vetted your license, insurance, and background.

Disputing bad leads is part of the job

You will get spam and wrong-number leads. You have to flag them to get credited, and that is ongoing work, not a one-time setup.

Most contractors ask whether the badge is worth it as if it were a thing you buy on its own. It is not. It comes bolted to Local Services Ads, and once you see how the whole thing actually works, the answer gets clearer.

The number behind how we think about this. When we took our own shop's marketing back in-house, the conversion tracking had been broken for six months, so most calls and form fills were never counted and the ad budget was being spent half-blind. We fixed the tracking and rebuilt the campaigns, and qualified leads (real calls and form fills) went from about 10 a month to 58. That 10-to-58 is the only first-party number on this site. The benchmark figures below are sourced public industry data, not our results.

What the badge actually is

The badge is the small check mark that shows next to your business at the very top of Google when someone searches for a contractor in your area. It comes with Local Services Ads, the pay-per-lead format that sits above the regular search ads and the map pack. You do not buy the badge by itself. You go through Google’s verification (license, insurance, and a background check on the business), and once you pass, the badge appears on your Local Services Ads. Google calls it the Google Verified badge now, after folding the older Google Guaranteed and Google Screened badges into one check in late 2025.

For years the badge also carried a money-back guarantee to the customer: if a homeowner hired you through your Local Services Ad and the work went wrong, Google might reimburse them up to a cap. That guarantee was discontinued in late 2025 when Google moved to the Verified badge. So today the check means Google verified your license, insurance, and background, and that is it. It is a trust signal, not a promise that Google will cover the job.

Why it helps (the real reasons)

The badge does three things that genuinely move the phone:

  • Placement. Local Services Ads sit at the very top, above the regular Google Ads. That position alone gets a disproportionate share of the clicks and calls, because it is the first thing on the screen on a phone.
  • Trust. A green check next to your name, on a Google-built listing, with a star rating, reads as vetted. Homeowners who have never heard of you treat the check as a shortcut for “Google checked these people out.” That borrowed trust is worth a lot when you are the unknown shop competing against a name they recognize.
  • Pay per lead, not per click. You are charged when someone contacts you (a call or a message), not every time someone clicks. On regular search ads you pay for the click whether or not it ever becomes a lead. The pay-per-lead model lines the cost up closer to the thing you actually want.

Notice none of these is a guarantee. The placement and the trust are what drive the calls, and they are exactly what survived the 2025 change. The old money-back guarantee is gone, and it was never the reason the phone rang anyway. Most homeowners pick you because you are first and you have a verified check next to your name.

The honest catches

This is where the “usually yes” earns its “usually.” The badge is worth it, but go in with eyes open:

  • The screening is a hassle. Verification takes license, insurance, and a background check, and it can take a couple of weeks and a few rounds of back-and-forth before you are live. It is a one-time pain, but it is a real one, and it trips up shops that expected to flip a switch.
  • You pay per lead, not per booked job. Lead pricing runs roughly $45 to $90 by trade, and that is per lead, not per job won. A lead that never books still cost you. If your team is slow to answer the phone or weak at turning calls into appointments, you are paying for contacts you are not closing.
  • You have to dispute the bad leads. You will get spam, wrong numbers, robocalls, and people outside your service area. Google will credit a lot of those back, but only if you flag them. That means someone has to review the leads and dispute the junk, every week. Skip it and you quietly overpay.
  • There is no money-back guarantee anymore. Google discontinued it in late 2025, so do not sign up expecting Google to back the job or vouch for your lead quality. The Verified check means your license, insurance, and background were checked. That is worth having for the placement and the trust, but go in clear about what it is.
  • Your Google Business Profile is doing the heavy lifting. Your reviews, your rating, and how fast you answer increasingly drive where you rank in Local Services Ads. The badge gets you in the room, but a thin or neglected profile keeps you near the bottom of it.

Worth it if, skip it if

Here is the call, stripped down.

It is worth it if you can answer the phone fast and you have a real process for turning a call into a booked job. The badge and the placement will hand you contacts at the top of the results, and the shops that win with Local Services Ads are the ones that pick up quickly, follow up, and dispute the junk leads. If that is you, the badge is one of the better-value spots in contractor marketing.

Skip it (for now) if nobody is reliably answering the phone, your service area is too narrow to clear enough leads, or you do not have anyone to review and dispute bad leads. In that case you would be paying per lead to send contacts into a leaky bucket, and you are better off fixing the answer-and-follow-up problem first, then turning the badge on.

If you want the full mechanics of getting verified and live, how to set up Local Services Ads walks through it step by step. Run it as one system with your search ads rather than a separate channel; they cover each other’s blind spots.

Who this is and is not for

If you want a channel you can set up once and never touch, the badge is not that, the lead disputing and the profile upkeep are ongoing. But if you want a top-of-page, trust-stamped, pay-per-lead channel and you will work it, it earns its keep. If you want a straight read on whether it is right for your shop and your market, here is the offer.
