How to Set Up Local Services Ads (and Pass the Screening)

Local Services Ads are the cheapest lead in the trades, roughly $45 to $90 a lead, and you only pay when someone contacts you. The catch is the screening, and it trips up every shop that rushes it.

How to Set Up Local Services Ads (and Pass the Screening)

The short version

Screening is the whole gate

License, insurance, and a business background check come first. Get these right and clean, or you never go live.

The badge is the payoff

Pass screening and you earn the Google Verified check mark that puts you at the top and does the trust work.

Set categories and service area honestly

Your job types and the towns you actually cover decide which searches you match. Vague or overreaching costs you.

Budget by leads, not dollars

You only pay per lead, so set a weekly budget by how many leads you want, and your reviews drive where you rank.

Dispute junk and answer fast

Flag spam and out-of-area leads for credit to protect your cost per lead, and pick up fast because speed wins the job.

Local Services Ads are the cheapest paid lead a contractor can buy, and you only pay when a real person contacts you. The reason shops stall out is not the ads, it is the screening, and rushing it is how you end up waiting weeks to go live. Here is the setup, in order.

Here is the proof behind how we work. When we brought our own shop's marketing back in-house, the ad budget had been running for six months with the conversion tracking broken, so most calls and form fills were never counted. Getting the Google Business Profile finished and the reviews moving was part of the fix, and the same reviews that lift a profile lift your Local Services Ads rank. After the rebuild, qualified leads (real calls and form fills) went from about 10 a month to 58. That 10-to-58 is the only first-party number on this site. Everything else here is plain best practice, not a result we are claiming.

1. Get your license, insurance, and business verification ready

This is the gate, and it is where the rush shows. Google screens you before you can run Local Services Ads: license, insurance, and a business (and sometimes owner) background check. Bad or missing paperwork is the number one reason a shop sits in limbo for weeks.

  • How we would do it. Gather it all before you start the application: current trade license, a certificate of insurance with the right coverage and limits, and your business details exactly as they appear on your other records. Submit clean documents, then watch the dashboard and answer any follow-up the same day so the review keeps moving.
  • Tip. The single biggest cause of a slow approval is a document that does not match (an expired license, an insurance cert under a slightly different business name). Make every piece consistent before you submit and you skip the back-and-forth.

2. Earn the Google Verified badge

Passing the screening is what earns you the Google Verified check mark (the badge Google renamed from Google Guaranteed in late 2025), and that badge is the whole point. It puts you in the LSA block at the very top of the page and tells a cautious homeowner that Google vetted you.

  • How we would do it. Complete screening fully and accurately so the badge clears, then make sure the basics it relies on stay current (license and insurance on file, business details correct). The badge is not a one-time trophy; let your insurance lapse and it can come down.
  • Tip. The badge is doing real work on a homeowner who is nervous about who they let in the door. Treat keeping it as part of the job, not a setup step you do once and forget. The full case for it is in whether the Google Verified badge is worth it.

3. Set your categories, service area, and job types

Local Services Ads do not use keywords. Google matches you to searches based on your categories, the job types you turn on, and the area you cover, so this is where you steer who finds you.

  • How we would do it. Choose the categories that match your real trade, then turn on the specific job types you want more of and turn off the ones you do not do. Set your service area to the towns you actually cover, honestly, so you are matched to searches you can serve.
  • Tip. Be honest about your range and your job types. Turning on work you do not really want, or towns you cannot reach in time, just buys you leads you have to dispute later. Match the settings to the jobs you actually want.

4. Set a weekly budget by the leads you want

LSA bills per lead, not per click, so the budget question is not “how many dollars” but “how many leads.” Google lets you set a weekly budget around your lead goal.

  • How we would do it. Work backward from jobs. Decide how many leads a week you can handle and close, multiply by a realistic cost per lead (roughly $45 to $90 by trade), and set the weekly budget there. Start measured, watch what the leads are worth, then raise it once you see them booking.
  • Tip. Because you only pay for actual contacts, LSA is forgiving to start small and scale. Do not blow the whole budget chasing volume before you know your leads are turning into booked jobs.

5. Drive reviews, because reviews drive your LSA rank

Your ranking inside the LSA block leans heavily on your Google reviews: how many, how good, and how fresh. This is the lever most contractors leave sitting on the table.

  • How we would do it. Build a simple habit of asking every happy customer for a review right after the job, make it one tap with a short link, and reply to all of them. Keep a steady drip rather than a burst, because steady reads as real and ranks better over time.
  • Tip. Never buy or fake reviews. Google catches it, and a penalty costs you the badge and the ranking you built. Earn them the slow, real way and they keep paying you back.

6. Dispute bad and spam leads to protect your cost per lead

Not every LSA lead is a real customer. Spam, wrong numbers, and out-of-area calls happen, and the good news is you do not have to eat them the way you eat a wasted Google Search click. You can dispute them.

  • How we would do it. Review your leads regularly and flag the ones that do not count: spam, robocalls, jobs clearly outside your service area or categories. Submit the dispute through the LSA dashboard for a credit, with a quick note on why. Done consistently, this keeps your true cost per lead honest.
  • Tip. Disputing junk is one of the few cost levers LSA hands you, so use it. Letting bad leads slide quietly inflates your cost per lead and hides how well the channel is really doing.

7. Answer fast, because speed wins the lead

LSA leads come in as live calls and messages from people ready to hire now, and they are contacting more than one shop. The first to pick up usually gets the job.

  • How we would do it. Treat every LSA call like the hot lead it is and answer on the first try. If you cannot always pick up, have a plan: a person, an answering service, or a fast callback, plus ad hours set to when you can respond. Slow responses also drag your ranking down over time.
  • Tip. Speed-to-lead is the whole game here. A lead that goes to voicemail is a lead the next contractor just booked. Pick up fast and a cheap LSA lead turns into a real job.

Who this is and is not for

If you want the cheapest paid lead in the trades and you are willing to do the screening right and answer the phone, LSA is close to a no-brainer. If you want to control the exact searches and the landing page, you will want Google Search alongside it. If you want both run as one system and tracked to booked jobs, here is the offer.

Get it live, or have it run for you

That is the setup: pass the screening clean, earn the badge, set your categories and area honestly, budget by leads, drive reviews, dispute the junk, and answer fast. None of it is complicated. It is just the consistent work that turns the cheapest lead in the trades into booked jobs. If you are still deciding whether to lead with LSA or search, start with the pillar: Local Services Ads vs. Google Ads for contractors.
